Application Process FAQ
If your application status shows as “Submitted” and each supplemental document is listed as “complete,” then your application is complete and under review by our admissions committee. However, your application might still appear incomplete even if you submitted everything correctly by the deadline.
To stay updated, you can check your application status through the online application system. Additionally, the status of each supplemental document will update to “complete” once the Graduate School receives it. However, please note that the Areas of Interest Form will not appear in the online application. Instead, you must check its status in GradWatch.
If you have just submitted your online application and paid the processing fee, your application will still remain “incomplete” until your recommendation letters and standardized test scores are received and matched to your application.
Furthermore, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) electronically reports GRE and TOEFL scores to NC State. Keep in mind that it can take up to four weeks for scores to reach NC State and several business days for the Graduate School Admissions Office to match them to your application. Lastly, if any supplemental documents are missing, the IMSE Program will notify you.
We understand that waiting for an update on your application can be stressful. Thank you for your patience during this process. You can expect a decision within three to eight weeks after completing your application.
The Educational Testing Service (ETS) must send Official GRE and TOEFL test scores electronically. Use NC State University’s Institution Code 5496. A department code is not required.
To submit IELTS scores, email the TRF number or a copy of your IELTS score sheet to the Graduate School Admissions Office at graduate_applications@ncsu.edu. The admissions staff will retrieve your official score from the IELTS website and upload it to your online application. Alternatively, you can mail a hard copy of your official IELTS score report to the Graduate School Admissions Office at this address:

You do not need to submit official transcripts when applying. However, you must submit official transcripts and degree statements no later than one month into your first semester. Mail official transcripts to the Graduate School Admissions Office at this address:
